Rent a Mac in the Cloud: Per Minute, Per Day or Per Month (2026)

Abhishek Ray · October 22, 2026

Renting a Mac in the cloud costs as little as $4 a day or $25 a month for a managed remote desktop, €0.11 an hour (ex tax) with a 24-hour minimum for a dedicated Mac mini, or $0.05 a minute if a coding agent only needs the Mac while it builds and tests. The billing unit matters more than the rate: per minute, per hour with a 24-hour minimum, per day, or per month. Pick the wrong one and you pay for a Mac that sits idle.

This guide compares 19 plans by how they bill and what you actually get (a desktop, SSH, or just CI jobs), with prices I checked on October 22, 2026, and works out what each costs for four common ways people use a rented Mac. (Looking for a physical MacBook for a shoot or an event? That’s a local rental shop, not this guide.)

Disclosure: I make macbox, one of the options below. It’s the right pick for one of the four usage patterns and the wrong pick for the other three, and I’ll say which.

The four ways cloud Macs are billed

Per minute. You pay for the minutes the Mac is working. macbox charges $0.05 per Mac minute, only while a build, test, screenshot or live session runs. NoMac charges $0.80 an hour, billed by the minute. CI services like GitHub Actions ($0.062 a minute for a standard macOS runner) and Codemagic ($0.095 a minute after 500 free minutes) also bill this way, but you get a job, not a machine.

Per hour, with a 24-hour minimum. Scaleway, Flow Swiss and AWS bill dedicated Mac minis by the hour (AWS by the second), but each allocation costs at least 24 hours. Scaleway’s docs put it plainly: “The minimum lease period for Apple silicon is 24 hours.” Flow adds that “Billing also takes place when the device is switched off.” So the cheapest possible session is a day, and if you forget to release the machine, the meter keeps running.

Per day. MacinCloud’s Pay-As-You-Go plan is $4 a day; MacRent charges $15 for 24 hours.

Per month. Most providers: MacinCloud’s managed and dedicated plans, MacStadium, rentamac.io, OakHost, HostMyApple, Macly, and Scaleway’s monthly price. You get the same Mac all month, whether you use it or not.

What you actually get: a desktop, SSH, or a CI job

The second question is how you reach the Mac:

  • A remote desktop (RDP, VNC, Apple Screen Sharing): you see macOS and work in Xcode as if the Mac were across the room on a slow connection. Good for hands-on work.
  • SSH: a terminal on the Mac. Good for scripts, and you can run xcodebuild yourself, but setting up the Simulator and syncing code is on you.
  • A CI job: you push code, a Mac you never see builds and tests it, you read the log. Good for every-commit builds and shipping to TestFlight; useless for poking at your app.
  • A CLI or MCP server for agents: a coding agent sends build, test and screenshot commands to the Mac and reads the results. This is what macbox does.

Sources, all checked October 22, 2026: MacinCloud, MacRent, Scaleway pricing and FAQ, Flow, AWS, HostMyApple, OakHost, MacStadium, rentamac.io, Macly, NoMac, GitHub, Codemagic, Bitrise, Xcode Cloud, Azure.

A few things the table doesn’t show:

  • Stock is a real problem. When I checked, rentamac.io’s pricing page said “All instances are currently allocated,” MacRent’s monthly plan was sold out with a waitlist, every OakHost Mac mini was listed as unavailable, and Macly said individual orders were temporarily unavailable. Check availability before you plan around a provider.
  • A VPS isn’t a Mac mini. HostMyApple’s $24.99 plan is a virtualized macOS Big Sur with 3 GB of RAM. Big Sur can’t run current Xcode, which needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later (Apple), so check which macOS a VPS plan gives you before you buy. The dedicated options give you the whole machine.
  • Managed means no admin. MacinCloud’s $25 plan doesn’t give you admin rights, so you can’t install everything you might want. The $49 dedicated plan does.

What it costs for how you’ll use it

Here’s the arithmetic for four patterns. Your numbers will differ; the point is how much the billing unit changes the bill.

1. A coding agent that builds and tests your iOS app all day. In a real run from Linux, an agent’s full loop through macbox (first build, tests, a screenshot, a rebuild, a live Simulator session with three taps) billed 2 minutes, because the builds finished in under a minute and were free. If your agent runs that loop 10 times a working day, that’s 20 billed minutes a day, about 440 a month: $22 on macbox. macbox has a daily limit of 180 Mac minutes per account; this example uses 20, but an agent that needs the Mac for hours a day is better off with a dedicated machine. A dedicated monthly Mac starts at $49, plus setting it up so the agent can drive it. Per-hour providers would bill at least a day each time you start one.

The other per-minute option for agents is NoMac, at $0.80 an hour, about $0.013 a minute: roughly a quarter of macbox’s per-minute rate, with a $5 cap per session by default and SSH access. For the same example, NoMac would cost about $5.87 a month if only those 440 minutes were billed, or about $110 if each working day were one 8-hour session (capped at $5 a day). Where your usage falls between those depends on how long its sessions stay open; macbox bills only while a build, test, screenshot or live session runs, and a job under a minute is free.

2. One full day of hands-on Xcode a month. You need a desktop, so macbox is the wrong tool. Cheapest options for one day: Scaleway’s M1 at about €2.64 for the 24-hour minimum (€0.11 × 24, before tax), then MacinCloud Pay-As-You-Go at $4, Flow at CHF 6.48, MacRent at $15, and AWS mac2 at about $15.60.

3. A Mac you work in every day. Rent by the month. MacinCloud’s $25 managed plan is the cheapest managed desktop plan in the table if you can live without admin rights; HostMyApple’s $24.99 VPS is cheaper on paper but has 3 GB of RAM and Big Sur. For a dedicated Mac mini, MacinCloud Dedicated ($49), Scaleway’s M1 (€75) and MacStadium ($109) are the main options, stock permitting.

4. Build and test on every push. Use CI, not a rented machine. GitHub Actions at $0.062 a minute, Codemagic with 500 free minutes a month, Bitrise’s free Hobby plan, Xcode Cloud with 25 hours included in the developer program, or Azure Pipelines, whose free minutes come with conditions (see below). Xcode Cloud can also upload builds to App Store Connect, which a rented desktop leaves to you.

Cloud Mac for iOS development with a coding agent

The pages I read that rank for “rent a Mac” (October 2026) don’t mention coding agents, and the usual options fit them badly. Claude Code, Codex or Cursor running on Linux, in WSL or in a cloud sandbox can write Swift, but to know whether it works they need to run xcodebuild, run the tests and look at the Simulator. An agent works far better with commands it can call and output it can read than with a remote desktop it has to look at. SSH gets closer, but on most of the plans above you’re then paying for a whole Mac by the month or the day while the agent spends most of its time writing code, and you still have to sync the code and manage the Simulator.

macbox is built for this case. Your agent gets its own macOS VM with Xcode 27, and a CLI and MCP server it can call (it can also run MobileBuildMCP, formerly XcodeBuildMCP, for deeper Xcode tools): macbox build, macbox test, macbox screenshot, and macbox run for a live Simulator session you can watch and click. Setup is one sentence to your agent: “Set up macbox by following https://api.macbox.build/guide/”. It costs $0.05 per Mac minute, and new accounts start with $10 of credit, about 200 Mac minutes. NoMac is the other per-minute option for agents, and it also gives you SSH. The walkthrough with real timings is in Claude Code for iOS, and if you’re on Windows, Xcode on Windows covers the wider options.

What macbox doesn’t do: no remote desktop, no code signing, TestFlight or App Store upload, no physical devices, and no React Native, Flutter or Expo yet. It builds Xcode projects and Swift packages, not arbitrary command-line builds. If you need any of those, one of the other options above is the better rental.

MacinCloud alternatives

MacinCloud ranks for almost everything in this space, so here’s where to go instead, by what you need:

  • Admin rights and a dedicated machine: MacinCloud Dedicated at $49 is the cheapest monthly option. Outside MacinCloud, Scaleway’s M1 is €75 a month, or €0.11 an hour with a 24-hour minimum if you only need it now and then.
  • Pay only for the days you use: MacRent at $15 a day, or the hourly providers with their 24-hour minimum.
  • SSH access: MacRent, Macly and HostMyApple offer it alongside a desktop; AWS EC2 Mac and NoMac give you SSH.
  • A coding agent doing the work: macbox or NoMac, both billed by the minute.
  • Builds on every commit: a CI service rather than any rental.

Can you rent a Mac on Google Cloud or Azure?

Not as a machine you log into. Azure doesn’t sell macOS virtual machines; its Pipelines service has Microsoft-hosted macOS build agents, and Microsoft’s docs say they don’t offer “the ability to remotely connect.” The 1,800 free minutes a month are for private projects in an organization linked to an Azure subscription, with a 60-minute limit per job. I couldn’t find a Mac offering on Google Cloud as of October 2026. AWS is the big cloud that rents Macs, through EC2 Mac.

Checklist before you rent

  • Billing unit and minimum: per minute, per hour with a 24-hour minimum, per day, or per month?
  • Billed while off? On Flow, yes. On the hourly providers, release the machine when you’re done.
  • Access: remote desktop, SSH, CI job, or agent CLI. Match it to how you’ll work.
  • Admin rights: managed plans often don’t include them.
  • Dedicated or virtualized: a 3 GB VPS and a 16 GB Mac mini are different products.
  • macOS and Xcode version: Xcode 27 needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later, and Apple says it “will only install and run on Apple silicon Macs” (release notes). Check which macOS and Xcode the provider gives you.
  • Stock: several providers were sold out when I checked.

FAQ

How much does it cost to rent a Mac in the cloud?

To rent a Mac online, expect from $4 a day or $25 a month for a managed MacinCloud remote desktop, $24.99 a month for a small Mac VPS, from $49 a month for a dedicated Mac, or by usage: $0.05 per Mac minute on macbox, $0.80 an hour on NoMac, and $0.062 a minute for a GitHub Actions macOS runner.

Can I rent a Mac by the hour?

Yes, but most hourly providers have a 24-hour minimum: Scaleway (€0.11 an hour for an M1), Flow Swiss (CHF 0.27 an hour) and AWS EC2 Mac ($0.65 an hour for mac2). For truly short use, pick a per-minute option.

Is there a free cloud Mac?

Not as a desktop, apart from short trials. For builds, Codemagic includes 500 free macOS minutes a month, Bitrise has a free Hobby plan, Azure Pipelines has 1,800 free minutes (with conditions), and Xcode Cloud 25 hours a month with the $99 developer program. New macbox accounts get $10 of credit, about 200 Mac minutes.

Can I rent a Mac mini in the cloud?

Yes. Scaleway, Flow, OakHost, MacStadium, MacRent, rentamac.io and Macly all rent dedicated Mac minis, mostly by the month, though several were sold out when I checked.

Is a macOS VPS the same as a dedicated Mac?

No. A macOS VPS (or Mac VPS) like HostMyApple’s is a virtual machine sharing a Mac with others, with a few GB of RAM. A dedicated Mac mini is the whole computer.

Can I use a cloud Mac to publish to the App Store?

A rented desktop Mac with Xcode can sign and upload like any Mac. CI services like Xcode Cloud can upload builds too. macbox can’t sign or upload yet.
